Why we need energy-efficient buildings

Energy is an important sector in India’s climate change mitigation efforts, contributing to 77% of its greenhouse gas emissions

Residential electricity consumption (REC) makes up for about one-fourth of India’s total electricity consumption.

Various studies have projected a five to six times increase in REC in India by 2030. Almost all studies predict that it (REC) will be in the range of 400 to 500 TWh (tera watt hour) by 2020, almost twofold of what Indian homes were consuming in 2014. By adopting efficiency measures, REC can be brought down by 20 to 25%.

Green materials for a greener world: Athanassia Athanassiou at TEDxRoma

Athanassia Athanassiou has been a Senior Researcher in the Smart Materials Group in the Department of Nanophysics of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. She works with Smart Materials; an example of such being a special sponge that specifically absorbs oil; this sponge has the potential to save our oceans in case of ecological disasters.

Very recently she developed novel plastic materials from vegetable wastes that can replace synthetic polymers. These plastics have minimal environmental impact because unlike the synthetic polymers are biodegradable and on top give a solution to the problem of waste management.

Why the word 'sustainability' should be banned: Article from the Guardian

The word "sustainability" should be banned from technical and political discourse. It has become so corrupted as to not only be meaningless, but to actually obscure the real issues that must be dealt with. To begin with, we must attest that all human activity has impacts, and these may go far beyond the present sustainability indicators. Nevertheless, we need to take responsibility for all of them and strive to minimise or mitigate them.

Ecological deficit/Reserve

An ecological deficit occurs when the ecological footprint of a population exceeds the biocapacity of the area available to that population. A national ecological deficit means that the nation is importing biocapacity through trade, liquidating national ecological assets or emitting carbon dioxide waste into the atmosphere. An ecological reserve exists when the biocapacity of a region exceeds its population's ecological footprint.
